Combining Weight : (Chem) The number of grams of an element that combines with or replaces 8 grams of oxygen or its equivalent. Also defined as the molecular weight divided by the valence. Syn: equivalent weight. Note: The commonly accepted standard is 7. 9997 grams of oxygen, which combines with 1. 00797 grams (equivalent weight) of hydrogen. No element has a combining weight less than 1
