Committed Effective Dose 1 : Radiation and Radiological Disasters. A person irradiated by ionizing radiation outside the body will receive a dose only during the period of irradiation. However following an intake by ingestion or inhalation, some radionuclides persist in the body and irradiate the various tissues for many years. The resulting total effective dose delivered over a lifetime (70 years for infants, 50 y for adults) is called the committed effective dose E. See also: Effective dose coefficient
