Birkeland-Eyde

Birkeland-Eyde : Also known as the Arc process. A process for making nitric acid by passing air through an electric arc, forming nitric oxide, oxidizing this with air, and absorbing the resulting oxides of nitrogen in water: N2 + O2 + 2NO ? 2NO + O2 + 2NO2 ? 2NO2 + H2O+ HNO2 + HNO3 ? 3HNO2 + HNO3 + 2NO + H2O. The arc is spread into a disc by an electromagnet. (Check source for accuracy of chemical formula)
