Competitiveness 1

Competitiveness 1 : The European Commission's 1994 White Paper on Growth, Competitiveness and Employment contains guidelines for a policy of global competitiveness. The policy encompasses four objectives, which have lost none of their topicality today: (1) helping European firms adapt to the new globalized and interdependent competitive situation; (2) exploiting the competitive advantages associated with the gradual shift to a knowledge-based economy; (3) promoting the sustainable development of industry; (4) reducing the time lag between the pace of change in supply and the corresponding adjustments in demand. The new title on employment incorporated in the EC Treaty by the Treaty of Amsterdam takes account of the objectives set in the White Paper. See: Competition; Treaties
