Compounding
Compounding : (a) Steam engines. The process of carrying out the total expansion of the steam in two or more cylinders in succession. (b) Impulse steam turbines. The process of dividing up into stages the total drop of pressure in the turbine ("pressure compounding") or the total absorption of kinetic energy ("velocity compounding"). In the former case there will be several nozzle stages but single row wheels, while in velocity compounding the expansion is completed in a single set of nozzles, but the wheel carries two or more rows of blades
