Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) 3 : This act was enacted into law in 1980, and its follow-up amendment, the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), was passed in 1986. These two laws establish a series of programs for the cleanup of hazardous waste disposal and spill sites nationwide. CERCLA and SARA also establish cleanup programs for inactive and abandoned hazardous waste sites. CERCLA and SARA are administered by the USEPA in cooperation with individual states and site owners.
