Computer 4

Computer 4 : A 'General Purpose Computer' is a machine that can carry out some general data processing under program control. For example, if you ran a shop and you had a list of all the items that have been sold today, you could feed this data into a computer. This computer would then work out your new stock levels, it could tell you how much profit you have made and so on. This is 'data processing'. This computer would have a set of instructions stored in some kind of memory (most likely a hard disk). This collection of instructions is called a 'computer programme'. There are thousands of programmes written to carry out all manner of tasks such as stock control, playing music, browsing the internet and so on. All computers have three things in common. (1) A central processing unit. (2) Some memory. (3) Some method of inputting data and outputting information
