Cone, Cone Number

Cone, Cone Number : A measure of temperature used by potters. Pyrometric cones are cone-shaped objects designed to soften and bend after absorbing a specific amount of heat. Potters place these cones in the kiln and observe them through peepholes; when the cone bends all the way over the proper amount of heat has been delivered to the pottery being fired. Although cones bend within narrow temperature ranges there is not a simple relationship between cone number and temperature. Technical tables are?posted?on the Internet by the Orton Ceramic Foundation
