Confounding 4 : This can occur when an association between a risk factor and disease can be explained by a factor associated with both disease and risk factor. For example, an association between smoking, alcohol consumption, and lung cancer is observed. However, because alcohol consumption does not affect lung cancer rate in non-smokers and there are more smokers among alcohol drinkers, alcohol consumption is associated with smoking rather than lung cancer
