Coolant 1 : Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Disasters. (1) (Techn) A heat transfer agent used generally in a closed circulating system for removing heat from a high-temperature source and dissipating it from a radiator. The working fluid in refrigeration or emulsions used in metal cutting operations. (2) (Nucl Phys) A gas or liquid circulated through a nuclear reactor to remove or transfer heat. Common coolants are water, air, carbon dioxide, liquid sodium, and molten sodium-potassium alloy (NaK)
