Copenhagen Declaration


Copenhagen Declaration :

A declaration adopted by world leaders at the conclusion of the World Summit for Social Development, which was held from 6 —12 March 

1995 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This summit of world leaders (perhaps the largest ever - some 117 Heads of State), adopted a Declaration and a Programme of Action to put people at the centre of development. They pledged the following as their overriding objectives: (a) conquer poverty; (b) achieve full employment; and (c) foster stable, safe and just societies. Specifically, within the Declaration they made the following commitments to: (a) eradicate absolute poverty by a target date to be set by each country; (b) support full employment as a basic policy; (c) promote social integration based on the enhancement and protection of all human rights; (d) achieve equality and equity between women and men; (e) accelerate the development of Africa and the Least Developed Countries; (f) ensure that structural adjustment programmes include social development goals; (g) Increase resources allocated to social development; (h) create "an economic, political, social, cultural and legal environment that will enable people to achieve social development"; (i) attain universal and equitable access to education and primary health care; and (j) strengthen cooperation for social development through the United Nations
