Core 01 : (1) (Metall) A shaped, hard-baked cake of sand with suitable compounds that is placed within a mold, forming a cavity in the casting when it solidifies. (2) (Nucl Phys) The central part of a nuclear reactor, made up of fuel elements and a moderator, where the nuclei of the fuel fission (split) and release energy. The core is usually surrounded by a material that reflects stray neutrons back to the fuel. (3) (Build) The concentration of stairways, elevators, utility and service shafts in a highrise building. (4) (Build) The inner layer or ply of a laminated or sandwich construction, usually consisting of low quality material
