Corona 1
Corona 1 : An electrical discharge phenomenon occurring in gaseous substances, such as air. High electrical gradients exceeding the breakdown level of air lead to corona discharges. Mild corona will have a low sizzling sound and might not be audible above ambient noise in the substation. As the corona increases in level, the sizzling sound becomes louder and will be accompanied by popping, spitting, or crackling as flashover level nears.
