Couplings 1 : Devices for securing lengths of delivery or suction hose so as to secure continuity from the source of a water supply to the branch pipe. lnstantaneous couplings are in general use by fire brigades for delivery hose. 'Surelock' or bayonet couplings arc sometimes found perhaps on fireboats or on radial branches. Hermaphrodite couplings are still used for delivery hose but usually on docks or on board ships. Screw type couplings (round and 'V') were used by fire brigades on delivery hose but are now only found on some fixed firefighting installations. Adaptors can be used to enable interconnections between different types to be made. For suction hose screw type couplings of the round thread type are used
