Couplings, Hermaphrodite : Still used on delivery hose but mainly at docks or on hoard ships. Both parts of the coupling are identical. The hoses are connected so that the lugs of each pass through the gaps between the lugs and the flanges of the other. There is a danger of leakage at the joint but it is immaterial which end of a hose is run out towards the fire
