Decay 01

Decay 01 : Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Disasters. (1) (For Serv) Decomposition or disintegration of wood or other organic matter by fungus. Also called: Dote; Rot. Note: lncipient decay: An early stage in which disintegration has not proceeded far enough to soften or otherwise impair the hardness of the wood perceptibly. decay: A later stage in which disintegration is readily recognized because the wood has become punky, soft and spongy, stringy, pitted, or crumbly. See: Dry Rot. (2) (Nucl Phys) The partial disintegration of the nucleus of an atom by the spontaneous emission of charged particles or photons. What remains is a different element. An atom of polonium, for example, decays to form lead, ejecting an alpha particle in the process
