Decibel 12

Decibel 12 : (Acoust; Abb: dB) One-tenth of a bel. A dimensionless measure of sound expressed as the logarithmic ratio of two values of pressure, power, or intensity, one a measured quantity and the other a reference quantity. The decibel is most often used as the measure of sound intensity level and sound pressure level. Sound intensity is the sound power per unit area. Note: In common usage, decibels, noice level, and intensity level are used interchangeably. In electronics, the decibel is the unit of relative power level equal to 10 times the logarithm to the base 10 of the ratio of two powers, one of which is usually a reference value. In acoustics, the decibel is often taken as 20 times the logarithm of the sound pressure ratio, with the reference pressure equal to 0. 0002 dyne/cm2. A whisper is about 10 decibels, conversation about 60, and thunder about 120 dB
