Dermatitis 10 : Medicine. Inflammation of the skin. There are two types: (1) Irritant contact dermatitis: direct damage to the skin caused by contact with irritant substances, e.g. acids, alkalis, organic solvents; and (2) Allergic contact dermatitis: reaction caused by substances to which the skin has become sensitised. Exposure to minute amounts of such a substance will trigger an allergic reaction
