Detonation 03

Detonation 03 : (Comb) A supersonic self-propagating combustion reaction or a flame that propagates at supersonic speed. A detonation is a class of explosion that can be initiated in both gas phase and condensed phase. Essentially, the flame is a combustion wave that propagates faster than the local speed of sound so that a shock wave forms with a strong pressure jump. Detonation is often confused with explosion. The pressure rise in an explosion results from confinement (e. g. , as gunpowder in a rifle barrel) rather than from a supersonic rate of propagation. The equations describing detonations are the same as those describing flames See: Flame Equations. , but in the case of detonations the flow is supersonic and viscous losses become important. The rate of advance of the reaction zone is termed detonation rate or detonation velocity. Cf: Deflagration. Note: Detonation velocity, once reached, is almost constant for any given gas mixture. Dust will explode, but rarely detonate, because pressure buildup is too slow
