Detonation 20

Detonation 20 :

Violent explosion in which flame speed is equal to the velocity of sound in the gaseous products and is accompanied by a shock wave. The velocity is of the order of 1000 m/sec. Transient pressures can be very high, 1000 kN/m2. See also: Deflagration. Detonator explosives which decompose if heated or subjected to shock or blows, the initial period of decomposition being exceedingly brief. This is followed by a rapid acceleration in the rate of decomposition which culminates in a violent explosion which, in turn, sets up violent shock waves. Momentarily the shock waves may attain a temperature of 10,000oC, and the consequential gaseous expansion produces a pressure which is so violent as to be termed detonation
