Detonator 01 : (1) (Civ Eng; Mining) A device used to initiate an explosive. In an explosive train, the component which, when detonated by the primer, in turn detonates a less sensitive explosive, usually the booster, or when containing its own primer, initiates the detonation in the train. Note: A detonator can be actuated by either an explosive impulse (a primer) or a nonexplosive impulse. When actuated by a nonexplosive impulse, the detonator contains its own primer. Detonators are generally classified as percussion, stab, electric, or flash, according to the method of initiation. Syn: Blasting Cap; cap.
