Diaphragm Cell

Diaphragm Cell : A family of electrochemical chlor-alkali processes using cells with semipermiable membranes which minimize diffusion between the electrodes. The overall reaction is: 2NaCl + 2H2O + 2NaOH + H2 +Cl2. Chlorine is liberated at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode, where the sodium hydroxide is formed.
