Diatomaceous Earth 1 : (Techn) A soft, gritty amorphous silica composed of minute skeletons of small aquatic plants. Used in filtration and decolorization of liquids, insulation, wax, textiles, plastics, paint, rubber, and as a filler in dynamite. Calcined and flux calcined diatomaceous earths contain appreciable amounts of cristobalite
