As an Emergency Management Overview, Disasters happen - Fact! Whether at home or overseas, natural or man made, we are all impacted. Recent examples include the car bomb attack in June 2007 at Glasgow International Airport, a failed terrorist attack in May 2008 in Exeter, Cumbrian Floods winter 2009/10 and most recently the volcanic ash smoke plume in April and May 2010 causing disruption to thousands of people. North Somerset Council's role in an emergency is to support the emergency services and take over the coordination of the incident from the police to lead the community in the recovery and remediation phase. The authority's involvement may be measured in months or even years. Engagement in training and exercises is vital so that staff are aware of and prepared for, the tasks they may have to undertake
