Elementary Particle 1 : (Nucl Phys) Any of a number of subatomic particles, most of which are short-lived and do not exist independently under normal conditions except ions, electrons, protons, and neutrinos. Also called: Fundamental Particle. Note: Originally, this term was applied to any particle which could not be further bed; now it is applied to nucleons (protons and neutrons), electrons, mesons, antiparticles, and strange particles but not to alpha particles or deuterons
