Filter 01 : (1) (Electr) A device for separating frequency components of an audio signal or spectral band of any electromagnetic energy. Note: A pass filter allows one or more frequencies to pass relatively unattenuated and blocks all others. A blocking filter stops one or more frequencies and is indifferent to all others. The essential difference is in the purpose of the filter. (2) (Ind Hyg; Safety) a. The medium used in a respirator to remove particles from the intake air. b. The element or component containing a filtering medium. (3) (Opt) A selectively transparent plane parallel plate that transmits only a specific portion of the spectrum, or reduces the intensity of a light beam passing through it
