Fire Detector 5

Fire Detector 5 : (Build; Fire Pr) A mechanical, electrical, or electronic device that senses the presence of a fire from one of its signatures and generates a signal or trips another device. In simplest form, a temperature-sensor that sounds an alarm or actuates a sprinkler or other protective system at the first sign of a fire. See: Fire Signature. Note: Common fire detectors are fusible links and thermostats. More sophisticated detectors measure rate-of-rise in temperature, detect the presence of fire from an increase in ions or obscuration of a photoelectric beam by smoke particles, or sense infrared and ultraviolet radiation from the fire itself. A laser system has been developed to detect fires. When hot gases, which have a different index of refraction than air, bend the laser beam away from a photode- tector, it triggers an alarm
