Fire Flow 1

Fire Flow 1 : (Fire Pr) The flow rate of water in the mains of a given area required for fire protection in addition to the normal water consumption for that area. Note: For purposes of the "Grading Schedule for Municipal Fire Protection," the Insurance Services Office distinguishes between required fire flow and basic fire flow. Required fire flow is the rate of water flow needed to fight and confine a fire to the buildings within a block or within a group or complex of buildings. The required fire flow ranges from a minimum of 500 gpm to a maximum of 12,000 gpm for a single fire. Additional flows of 2000 to 8000 gpm are required for simultaneous fires. Basic fire flow is a practical rate usually somewhat below the required fire flow. It is the fire flow judged to be needed for suppressing fires in important districts
