Fire Nomenclature : (For Serv) The names assigned to the parts of a wildland fire. Note: Four sides are normally distinguished in a typical free-burning fire: (1) the head, which is the most rapidly advancing edge of a fire; (2) the two flanks, which are the sides adjoining the head at more-or-less right angles; and (3) the rear, which is the slowest-moving edge of the fire
