Fire Size Class

Fire Size Class : The assignment of a wildfire to a category according to its size (i.e. from the smallest fire to a very large fire). Recommended SI unit is hectares (ha) (10,000 sqm (or 100 m by 100 m). The following classification, adopted in 1986, is used for reporting national wildfire statistics: No. 1, Letter Area A: up to 0.1 ha; No. 2, Letter Area B: 0.11 - 1.0 ha; No. 3, Letter Area C: 1.1: 10 ha; No. 4, Letter Area D: 10.1: 100 ha; No. 5, Letter Area E: 100.1: 1000 ha; No. 6, Letter Area F: 1000.1: 10 000 ha; No. 7, Letter Area G: 10 000.1: 100 000 ha; No. 8, Letter Area H: over 100 000 ha. Either the number or letter can be used to designate a fire size class. Prior to the adoption of the above classes, the following classifications were used; in some cases the conversion from acres (ac) to hectares (ha) was not exact: Letter Area A: up to 0.25 ac (up to 0.09 ha); Letter Area B: 0.26-10.0 ac (0.1-4.0 ha); Letter Area C: 10.1-100.0 ac (4.1-40.0 ha); Letter Area D: 100.1-500.0 ac (40.1-200.0 ha); Letter Area E: over 500 ac (over 200 ha)
