First Aid 06 :

General. The minimum standards for providing first-aid at work in NSW is governed by the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation 2001, which supplements the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2000. Who is Responsible for First Aid? The Regulation states that a person or persons must be appointed to be in charge of the kit or kits. If there are more than 25 persons working at a place of work, anyone appointed shall be the holder of a current approved first-aid certificate. If there are more than 25 persons working there, then there is no requirement for the person in charge of the kit to be trained in first-aid. A person or persons must also be appointed to be in charge of a first-aid room if a first-aid room is required. Any person so appointed must be the holder of a current approved occupational first-aid certificate. Persons appointed to be in charge of kits or rooms shall be readily available to give first-aid. The Regulation states that notices must be put up near any first-aid kit and outside a first-aid room. The notices should give names, telephone numbers and usual location of work of any persons in charge of the kit or room and any other persons appointed to give first-aid. What Information Must Be Recorded? The Regulation states that a register of injuries and first-aid treatment must be kept at each place of work. The following details must be recorded by the person giving first-aid: (1) the name, age, address and occupation of the injured person; (2) the industry in which the person was working; (3) the operation in which the person was engaged at the time of injury; (4) the date and time the injury occurred; (5) a brief description of the type, cause and location of the injury and the treatment given; (6) the name of the first-aid person in attendance; (7) any referral for further treatment if required. What Other Requirements Are There? The person in control of the place of work shall ensure that: (8) the required information is recorded in the register; (9) the register is made available for inspection when requested by an inspector; (10) the records are kept for at least 5 years. This register may be combined with any other register which must be kept according to other legislation
