Incendiary 6 : A device that is purposefully designed to ignite a fire. Incendiaries can be classified according to function and delivery method. The two categories for incendiary functions are: (1) Hot set incendiaries - which are designed to ignite the fire immediately. (2) Time-delay incendiaries - which are designed to ignite the fire after a time delay, allowing the offender time to leave the area prior to ignition. The two categories for incendiary delivery method are: (1) Remote delivery incendiaries - which are designed to be thrown or propelled a distance. (2) Hand-held and placed incendiaries - which are designed to be carried and placed at the point of ignition. Indicators Physical marks, clues or patterns left on partially burned fuels and noncombustible objects which can be interpreted by a fire investigator. Accurate interpretation of indicators will enable a fire investigator to retrace the path of the fire to the point of origin. Indicators can be divided into two sub-categories: (1) Macro indicators - These are large scale clues, marks or patterns left on partially burned fuels and non-combustible objects that are readily visible at a distance. They are usually associated with areas of higher intensity burning, where there has been an advancing head fire. (2) Micro indicators - Small individual clues, marks or patterns left on partially burned fuels and non-combustible objects that are often not easily visible, particularly at a distance. They often become less noticeable the closer you move towards the fire origin
