Boom 18 : Any long beam. For example, (1) the elevating beam of an aerial platform; (2) the pole, pivoted at the heel of the mast, the point supported by chains or ropes to the upper end of the mast, used for handling cargo and to lift and swing loads over short distances. Floating boom is a barrier with a draught of about 30 cm (freeboard about 15 cm) used to contain oil spills
