Inhibition 2

Inhibition 2 : (1) Retardation or elimination of changes which normally take place in matter. The inhibitor should be effective in low concentration. E. g. addition of salts yielding nitrite, chromate or phosphate ions can reduce the rate of corrosion of iron. Foaming is an interfacial phenomenon which can be controlled by the presence of certain agents in low concentrations. The higher alcohols and polyalkylene glycols are useful foam inhibitors and certain silicones in concentrations of 10 p. p. m. and higher are foam control agents. (2) A process of fire extinguishment by the use of an agent which interrupts the chemical reactions in the flame. (BS 4422(1))
