Inhibitor 01 : (1) (Chem) A substance that retards or prevents normal chemical change from taking place. Syn: Negative Catalyst. Note: Inhibitors are used to moderate reactions or to minimize undesirable ones. Antioxidants; corrosion, foam, and ultraviolet inhibitors; preservatives; fuel oil additives; and rust preventors are typical examples. (2) (Comb) A chemical compound that reduces the degree of intensity of burning, or one that makes ignition more difficult. See: Retardant.
