Insulated Hold

Insulated Hold : A hold protected by non-conducting material such as granulated cork or cork slabs, glass wool or rock wool, etc. which will not readily transmit heat. The insulating material is contained between the ship's structure and an inside lining of wood or metal, and runs round the sides as well as above and beneath the hold. Ships built for the carriage of frozen or chilled meat and other perishable cargoes have refrigerating machinery and holds specially insulated so that they may be kept at the required temperature throughout the voyage
