Insulating Material 1

Insulating Material 1 : (1) Thermal A non-conducting heat material used to reduce heat transmission. In buildings used between double partitions, external walls and internal linings, or in a floor, etc. Non-combustible materials include, rock or glass wool, foamed slag, vermiculite; sometimes these are sandwiched between layers of bituminous material or felt - called `quiltings'. Sprayed asbestos, an asbestos mixture which is sprayed in liquid form on to beams, columns, floors etc. sets and aids fire resistance as well as aiding thermal insulation. (2) Electrical A non-conducting (dielectric) material used to confine as far as possible transmission of electricity. Mineral oils are used, for example in transformers and switchgear. Cables and flexible conductors are coated by pvc(polyvinyl chloride), pep (polychloroprene), csp (chloro-sulphonated polyethylene) and other plastics. See also: Cable
