Intake 02

Intake 02 : (a) A measure of exposure expressed as mass of substance in contact with the exchange boundary per unit body weight per unit time, i.e., mg/kg-day. (1) Acute: intake averaged over a period less than two weeks; (2) Chronic (daily): intake averaged over a long period of time (seven years to lifetime); (3) Subchronic: intake averaged over a period from two weeks to seven years. [AIHA, 2000: Risk Assessment Principles for the Industrial Hygienist, attributed to USEPA RAGS, 1989]; (b) The amount of contact with a medium containing an agent. Used for estimating dose received from a particular medium. [REAP, 1995: Residential Exposure Assessment Project]; (c) The process by which a substance crosses the outer boundary of an organism without passing an absorption barrier, e.g., through ingestion or inhalation.
