Interferometry 1 : (Opt) The technique of splitting a light beam, passing the parts along different paths, and reuniting them to produce a pattern of light and dark called interference fringes. Since they travel different paths, the components of the reunited beam are alternately in and out of phase, which additively and subtractively produces the fringes. Note: The principle is used to determine exact distances, compare wavelengths, study density gradients, measure fluid flow rates, and investigate many other phenomena
