Boundary Layer 1
Boundary Layer 1 : (Fl Mech; Symb: d) A layer in a moving fluid, adjacent to a stationary surface, in which shear forces are dominant. Fluid particles at the surface are essentially at rest with respect to the surface, and increase in velocity asymptotically with distance from the surface. Boundary layer thickness is arbitrarily defined as the distance from the wall to a point at which particles are moving at 99% of the free-stream velocity. Also called: Friction Layer. See: Skin Friction. See also: Laminar Flow; Stagnation Point
