Ladder 1


Ladder 1 : (1) (Fire Pr) A climbing implement consisting of two parallel side-pieces called beams, joined at intervals by cross-pieces called rungs. See also: Aerial Ladder; Bangor Ladder; Attic Ladder; Folding Ladder; Pompier Ladder; Trussed Ladder. Note: Depending on size, use, and design, ladders are made of wood, aluminum, steel, or fiberglass. The principal types of ladder: a) extension ladder - A 30- to 45-foot ladder with three sections that can be extended by means of a hand line or a winch and cable, fitted with jacks, handling poles, and plumbing gear. b) hook ladder - A light-weight ladder fitted with a toothed hook that is used to suspend the ladder from a window sill or the like. c) scaling ladder - A sec?tional ladder so designed that a number of sections can be joined together. d) short extension - A light-weight ladder having two sections extending to about 13 feet. e) first floor ladder - A single-section ladder, about 15 feet long, used for gaining access to buildings at first-floor level.
