A box alarm describes a fire department's response to a report of fire or smoke inside a structure. In many departments, multiple companies are dispatched at the same time on a box alarm. Some departments have Haz-Mat and Rescue Boxes for hazardous materials and rescue calls. The term box alarm originates from the original pull boxes located on the street in many communities. In Sand Springs, the term box alarm is not used. However an equivelant term, "1st Alarm", in Sand Springs summons two engine companies, one ladder company or rescue company and a chief officer
