Landslides BGS 08 : Triggering mechanisms. Landslides can be triggered by: (a) Rainfall. (b) Snowmelt. (c) Poor drainage of the slope. (d) Oversteepening of the slope. (e) Removal of material at the toe of the slope (e.g. coastal erosion or man-made cutting). (f) Addition of water on the slope (e.g. man-made ponds). (g) loading of the slope (additional weight to the upper slope). (h) Structural or lithological weaknesses
