Laser 01 : Radiation and Radiological Disasters. (Phys) An acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Note: Laser radiation can be stimulated in solids (such as ruby crystals), gases (neon-helium, for example), or even in liquids and plasma. The radiation is emitted in a very narrow wavelength band. By proper selection of lasing material and design, many wavelengths in the visible, uv, and it ranges are now available. Beams from laser devices can be used to detect fire in large enclosed spaces owing to the bending of the beam as it passes through heated air. Laser beams can be extremely intense and can produce serious burns in sensitive tissues, esp the retina of the eye
