Lateral Confinemen 1

Lateral Confinemen 1 : Restriction of fire spread caused by topographical features. When wildfires are confined by topographical features such as gullies, ravines, or narrow valleys, convective heating by confined gases and radiation feedback from flames and burning vegetation increases the heat release rate of the burning fuels. Rapid fire spread is also enhanced by the acceleration and channelling of wind through these topographical features. These factors may result in a more rapid combustion and spread than that of an unconfined vegetation fire
