Layer 2 ( and 1 of the oceanic crust) : Upper part of the oceanic crust, characterized by velocities lower than about 6.5 km/sec and by high velocity gradients (typically 0.5-1.0 km/sec per kilometer). (Layer 1 in this nomenclature is the water layer itself). See Minshull (2002)
