Mainshock 3 : The largest earthquake in a series of earthquakes that cluster, both geographically and in time. To be definitively called a mainshock, it should generally be at least half a magnitude unit larger than the next largest earthquake in the series. Otherwise, the series of earthquakes may be more accurately characterised as an earthquake swarm
