Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health MACOSH)

Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health MACOSH) : MACOSH is a discretionary committee established on February 8, 1995 and is authorized by Section 7(b) of the OSH Act to advise, consult with, and make recommendations to the Secretary of Labor through the Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health (Assistant Secretary) on matters relating to the maritime industry. MACOSH is comprised of 15 representative members appointed by the Secretary, that is diverse and balanced, both in terms of segments of the maritime industry represented (e.g., shipyard and longshoring industries), and in the views or interests represented by its 15 members (management, labor, safety and health professional organizations, government organizations and the public), one of whom the Secretary appoints to serve as committee chair. Membership is fairly balanced and includes divergent points of view on the issues MACOSH will face, including view points from traditionally under represented communities. All MACOSH meetings are open to the Public and are announced in the Federal Register and appear on this page. Additional information about Advisory Committees is found at 29 CFR 1912. The Committee's objective is to advise the Secretary and address the concerns of the entire maritime community on matters relevant to the safety and health of workers in the maritime industry, primarily focusing on the shipbuilding, shipbreaking, ship repair, and in the longshoring and marine terminal industries in the United States. The Assistant Secretary may seek the advice of the Committee on activities in the maritime industry related to the priorities set by the Agency, including: worker training, education, and assistance; setting and enforcing of standards; and assurance of safe and healthful working conditions for America's working men and women. The committee provides a collective expertise not otherwise available to the Secretary to address the complex and sensitive issues relating to the maritime industry.
