Mass 1 :
(1) (Phys) The quantity of matter in a body and a measure of its inertia; the property of a body that determines the acceleration it will acquire when acted upon by a given force. Often used as a synonym for weight, which, strictly speaking, is the force exerted by a body under the influence of gravity. See: Inertia; Weight.
