Mass 8 : The quantity of matter in a body. It may also be considered as: (1) Inertial mass - a measure of the inertia of a body (its resistance-to change of motion) as shown by comparing the rates at which the body and a standard mass (e. g. International prototype Kilogramme) change their speeds when the same forces are applied. (2) Gravitational mass - the force of gravity between two bodies, e. g. the Earth and a stone, depends upon their gravitational masses multiplied together and their distance apart
